BELLEVUE, Wash. – Robert D. Eveleth of Bar Harbor, and recently of Mercer Island, Wash., died Oct. 16, at the Overlake Hospital in Bellevue, Wash.

Bob was born on July 11, 1922, the third son of Evelyn Townsend Eveleth and Roger Eveleth of Auburn. He spent his youth in Auburn, where he graduated from Edward Little High School in 1940.

He joined the Army in 1941, and served for 22 years. He was a tuba player in the Army field band, served in the Pacific theater during World War II, trained as an X-ray technician, and served with a MASH unit in Korea.

Prior to his Army retirement as a master sergeant, he was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., from 1954 to 1964, during which time he and his wife, Barbara lived with their four daughters in the community of St. James, Mo.

The family attended Trinity Episcopal Church, where he served for a period as warden of the church. He returned to Maine with his family in 1964, where he joined the Mount Desert Island Hospital as an X-ray technician and worked until his retirement.

He is remembered by his family, friends and patients as a man of quick wit, kind spirit and dignity. He enjoyed sailing, organic gardening, classical music and was a fan of college football.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Barbara Curtis Eveleth, formerly of Bar Harbor and now of Pittsboro, N.C; his four daughters, Jolene O’Brien of Venice, Fla., Jenifer Fisher of Pittsboro, N.C., Julie Eveleth of Middletown, R.I., and Jan Eveleth of Mercer Island, Wash.; and seven grandchildren.
