Now that the elections are over, it is time for those elected to follow through and get down to doing business for the citizens of Maine.

Two things stand out among many that need to be addressed, and more stringent laws and penalties assessed. They are not related, but both are terrible crimes.

First, vandalism has taken place in many cemeteries in recent time. That is the most despicable crime, against defenseless people and their survivors who cannot protect their properties. Many times, there is no money to make repairs.

Second, both public and private properties are constantly being damaged by graffiti. Not only is that a blight on property, it is costly to remove, and in some cases, impossible to do so.

I believe that both those acts of destruction are done as a means of expression by those who have no respect for others’ property, and lack the education to channel their minds to better things.

I personally challenge elected representatives to the Legislature to immediately start legislation to make those acts a higher priority classification, and to make the penalty of conviction so great it will not only cause concern to those hoodlums, but also put teeth in the law for enforcement by the judicial system. Make all people accountable, with heavy fines, community service, restitution and public apology, to start with.

Not only will that make communities better, it would save thousands of dollars.

I urge elected representatives to take action, and hope others agree.
