PORTLAND (AP) – Republican Charlie Summers congratulated Democrat Chellie Pingree Wednesday for her victory in their race for the open congressional seat in Maine’s 1st District.

Summers had withheld his concession on election night, saying he wanted to wait until his hometown of Scarborough had tabulated the vote.

The former legislator who was on active duty with the Navy in Iraq during part of his campaign indicated that this was likely his last political race.

Summers also lost a bid for the seat in 2004.

The seat became open this year when Democrat Tom Allen ran for the Senate.
