AUBURN – A Lisbon man was indicted Wednesday on charges that he rammed several police cars before leading officers on a chase through Auburn and Poland in September.
Bartolo Ford, 47, was indicted on a dozen counts, including charges of aggravated attempted murder, aggravated criminal mischief, reckless conduct, eluding police, theft and receiving stolen property.
Ford, who was shot by police during the Sept. 15 confrontation, is accused of ramming two cruisers while leading officers on a chase in a truck filled with stolen goods.
The attempted murder charge stems from what was described in court documents as Ford’s repeated ramming of a police cruiser, which forced the officer in it to scramble out.
According to the indictment, Ford “did intentionally attempt to cause the death of Officer Matthew Johnson by knowingly and intentionally ramming his vehicle into the police cruiser of Officer Matthew, head-on, just after Officer Johnson was able to escape.”
Police say Ford had been spotted driving a truck filled with concrete tiles and other items stolen from Superior Concrete Co. on Minot Avenue.
Police said when they tried to stop the truck on Minot Avenue, Ford refused to pull over and sped away onto Hotel Road.
During the chase, Ford allegedly rammed the one-ton dump truck into a police cruiser driven by Cpl. Kris Bouchard, who fired at the stolen truck, striking Ford at least once in the upper leg.
Police said Ford rammed a second cruiser from behind and tried to drive into a third. The chase continued to Route 122 and north onto Route 26 before ending on Hines Road in Poland, where the truck slammed into two parked cars. Ford fled on foot, police said.
Police searched the woods for hours with the help of tracking dogs. By the time Ford gave himself up, bleeding from his wound, more than two dozen officers from five police agencies were involved in the capture.
Locally, police in Auburn and Lewiston are familiar with Ford after years of investigating burglaries, theft and other incidents in which Ford was described as a victim. Police said Ford lived for years in Lewiston and Auburn but had been staying in Lisbon around the time of the chase. Public records show that he has a residence on Pinewoods Road.
Police did not say how many shots were fired or how many struck Ford. The Attorney General’s Office is investigating the shooting.
