AUGUSTA (AP) – The Maine Public Utilities Commission’s winter restrictions that bar electric utilities from disconnecting customers who try to pay their bills take effect Nov. 15.

The winter rules remain in force through April 15 and also apply to natural gas service. The PUC says its Consumer Assistance Division will work with customers to establish affordable payment arrangements and identify financial assistance options.

PUC Chairman Sharon Reishus says the rules are designed to ensure that customers who had their service disconnected recently or face disconnection get a fair chance to make arrangements to keep their lights or gas on.

Electric and utilities are required to contact the customer by letter, phone and in-person before a disconnection may take place.
