AUBURN – Police on Thursday were continuing to investigate a Wednesday night crash that sent seven people to a Lewiston hospital.
Witnesses to the wreck at Minot Avenue and Garfield Road had reported a truck that pulled between two other vehicles may have contributed to the crash.
However, police said indications point to speed as a more likely cause.
About 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, a Ford Mustang driven by Alexandre Baroudi, 18, of Lewiston Street in Mechanic Falls collided head-on with a Jeep driven by Terry McAllister, 45, of Minot Avenue in Auburn.
Witnesses said the Mustang was traveling at a speed above the posted limit when the vehicles collided. On Thursday, police were investigating those reports.
The crash injured both drivers and passengers in their vehicles.
McAllister’s 15-year-old daughter, riding in the passenger seat, was among those injured. The girl’s name was not available Thursday night.
In Baroudi’s car were four 17-year-old passengers, according to a police report. They were Austin Baroudi, Casey Simpson, Mitchell Simon and Keith Daviau. All live in the area.
The seven victims were taken to Central Maine Medical Center with injuries ranging from broken bones to bumps and bruises. Some remained at the hospital Thursday while others had been released.
Terry McAllister, Daviau and Alexandre Baroudi were listed in good condition Thursday night at CMMC, according to a hospital spokesman.
Information about Austin Baroudi’s condition was not available while Simpson and Simon were no longer listed as patients at the hospital.
Witnesses said McAllister was driving her Jeep toward Mechanic Falls when it collided with Baroudi’s Mustang, traveling in the opposite direction.
Some of the victims had to be cut out of the mangled vehicles by rescue crews.
At the Auburn police station on Thursday, Lt. Michael Lemay said the crash report had not been finalized and he could provide no further details of the investigation.
In the minutes after the collision, witnesses said a silver truck had pulled onto Minot Avenue, causing the Mustang to swerve into the path of the oncoming Jeep driven by McAllister.
Police searched for that truck but said there was no indication that a third vehicle had contributed to the crash.
It was not known Thursday night if anyone would be charged in connection with the crash.
