BOSTON (AP) – A former Big Dig contractor has been sentenced for making false statements on the federal highway project.

U.S. District Judge Richard G. Stearns sentenced McCourt Construction Company on Friday to three years probation and ordered the company to pay a $500,000 criminal fine and $600,000 in restitution to the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority.

According to prosecutors, McCourt Construction and two of its billing managers engaged in a scheme of over-billing the Central Atery/Tunnel Project by falsely categorizing apprentice ironworkers.

The company has said the problem was “isolated.” McCourt had a $245 million contract to do finish work on the Interstate 93 tunnel.

The billing managers were sentenced earlier.
