OSWEGO, N.Y. (AP) – Authorities said a 19-year-old college student was in serious condition Monday after being assaulted by a soldier from New Hampshire outside an upstate New York bar.

Oswego police charged 23-year-old Kevin Flanagan with assault. He was expected to be arraigned Monday afternoon. Police said he may face additional charges as the investigation continues.

Flanagan, a private and fire support specialist with the 1-32 Infantry Battalion, got into an argument with Angel Moreno just after 3 a.m. Sunday outside the Pizza Pub in Oswego, police said. Flanagan then hit Moreno, leaving the Bronx man with a severe head injury. Police said it did not appear Flanagan used any weapons.

Flanagan, of Manchester, N.H., joined the Army in January 2006. He deployed to Afghanistan from May 2006 to June 2007, said Fort Drum spokeswoman Julie Cupernall.

Moreno is a student at the State University of New York at Oswego. He was flown to University Hospital in Syracuse in critical condition but a hospital spokeswoman said his condition was upgraded Monday.
