FARMINGTON – The Franklin Memorial Hospital Care Support Department will host a special program for people with diabetes from 2 to 4 p.m. Monday, Nov. 17, in the Forster Room. The free program is open to anyone with diabetes who would like to learn more about managing his or her disease. Family members and caregivers are also welcome.

A brief presentation on advances in diabetes care will take place from 2:15 to 2:45 p.m.

Prior to that and following the presentation, participants can receive help on technique and troubleshooting of blood glucose meters from certified diabetes educators; blood pressure checks; nutrition information; and free foot checks by Dr. Jeffrey Johnson and his staff of Sandy River Podiatry.

It is recommended that people with diabetes have a complete foot exam at least annually and more often if they have foot problems, according to the American Diabetes Association.

Nancy Thomas, RN, CDE, one of the certified diabetes educators who will be present, said, “People with diabetes frequently have problems with the nerves and circulation in their feet, which can lead to serious problems, including amputation. Through education and screenings such as this, we can lower the number of diabetes complications.”
