LAWRENCE (AP) – Police in Lawrence say they caught a bank robber ‘red handed.’ Literally, that is.

Fifty-year-old John Tripp was arrested within an hour after a Sovereign Bank branch was robbed, and a dye pack hidden in the cash loot exploded.

Lawrence Police Chief John Romero says an officer arrested Tripp on Monday after noticing red dye covering his hands and on some of the stolen cash.

The suspect allegedly robbed the bank by passing a note to tellers threatening that he had a gun, then fled by foot toward a nearby rooming house. But bank employees managed to hide a dye pack with the stolen cash.

Tripp was charged with armed robbery and held without bail for an arraignment Wednesday in Lawrence District Court.

It could not immediately be determined if he has a lawyer. There is no public telephone listing for Tripp.
