PORTLAND (AP) – Maine’s largest city observed Veterans Day with the traditional march down Congress Street and the rededication of a memorial to a World War II heavy cruiser that saw action in the Pacific during World War II.

Spectators lined the street through downtown Portland on Tuesday as marching bands, military vehicles and veterans marched from Longfellow Square to City Hall.

Following the march, the 46-year-old memorial made up of the aft mast, bridge shield and bell from the USS Portland was rededicated following a $150,000 restoration.

Several crew members who served on the Portland were at the ceremony at the memorial overlooking Fort Allen Park.
