LEWISTON – Gaetane L. Dostie, 75, of 6 Diamond Court, Lewiston, died Wednesday, Nov. 12, at 2:18 p.m. at her home surrounded by her husband, who took wonderful care of her and her children and grandchildren.
She was born on May 17, 1933, in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada, the daughter of Alphonse and Bertha (Guay) Asselin. She was brought up in the orphanage at a convent with her brothers and sisters until her mother found them and moved to Lewiston in 1947.
She was a wonderful homemaker always taking care of her husband and children first, and later worked for several years at Knapp Shoe to help support her family.
Our mother was a very rare soul blessed by God in a special way. She was a simple woman and always saw the good in everyone. Her charity was unmatched. Her selflessness unsurpassed, she was a model of true humility.
She spent her life sacrificing and praying for her family. Her faith in Jesus and Mary was strong and unwaivering. She was always there for us and always willing and wanting to help others, always there to listen to others’ problems. She was the kindest, gentlest and strongest woman we knew.
No, perhaps to the world she did not do any extraordinary works of recognition and perhaps most people did not even know she existed, but to us who are fortunate enough to have known and loved her we have been blessed to call her “MOM.”
We believe in regards to mom that we can take great comfort in the words of Our Lord; “Many sins are forgiven Thee because thou hast loved much.”
We love you, mom!
She is survived by her husband, Normand A. Dostie, of 48 years whom she married on Oct. 22, 1960; her seven children, Therese Thibodeau and her husband, Thomas, of Readfield, Denise Koch of Lewiston, Paul Dostie and his wife, Faith, of Lewiston, David Dostie of Lewiston, Daniel Dostie of Lewiston, Monique Raymond and her husband, Richard, of Idaho, and Guy Dostie and his wife, Kristen, of Lewiston; many grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; her brothers, Rene Asselin of Lewiston and Valmont Asselin and his wife, Stella, of Lewiston; sisters-in-law, Germaine Dostie and Jeannine Bolduc, both of Auburn and Thelma Dostie of Mechanic Falls; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her sister, Simonne Morris; and her brothers, Jean-Claude and Phillippe Asselin.
