NORWAY – A registered sex offender was arrested Saturday night on a charge of aggravated assault.

William Hershel Thomas III, 26, of Buckfield Road in Hebron is accused of attacking a 32-year-old man at the man’s apartment on King Street in Norway. The victim told police that Thomas punched him several times above his right eye and bit him on his right thigh when he put Thomas into a headlock.

Chief Robert Federico of the Norway Police Department said he and officer Theron Bickford responded to the incident and arrested Thomas at a Beal Street residence.

Federico said the man was transported by Pace Ambulance to Stephens Memorial Hospital and had stitches over his eye.

Thomas’s bail was set at $500 cash. He was released from the Oxford County Jail by Wednesday.

According to court documents, Thomas pleaded guilty in 2000 to a charge of gross sexual assault against a girl under the age of 14 in Oxford. He was sentenced to serve four years in prison, all but 30 days suspended, and three years of probation.

Thomas also pleaded no contest in 2004 to a charge of gross sexual assault involving a 14-year-old Mexico girl. He was sentenced to serve two years in prison at the same time he was serving a 36-month probation revocation on the 2000 charge.
