SOUTH PARIS – Raymond E. Wood, 86, of Naples and formerly of Fryeburg, died Nov. 13, at the Maine Veterans’ Home, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born June 21, 1922, in Swampscott, Mass., the son of the late Earle M. and Marjorie Rich Wood. Returning at an early age to his parent’s hometown, Sebago Lake Village, he attended Sebago Lake schools and graduated from Standish High School. He also graduated from Cincinnati Mortuary School of Science.
He was drafted into the Army during World War II, and then married Marie E. Delph of Malinta, Ohio, before serving overseas in the European Theatre. He returned to Portland, where he worked 13 years for Hay and Peabody Funeral Home. On Jan. 1, 1956, he took over ownership of F.A. Hill and Son Funeral Home in Fryeburg, which subsequently became Wood Funeral Home. He and his wife jointly ran the funeral home, until his retirement in 1990, at which time they moved to Naples.
He was active in community affairs, a member and longtime deacon of the First Congregational Church in Fryeburg, a member of Kiwanis and president of the Pine Grove Cemetery Association for many years. He is a member of the Royal Arch Masons, 32nd degree Scottish Rite Masons, Kora Shrine Temple. He is also a 50-year member and past patron of Pythagorean Chapter 169, Order of the Eastern Star in Fryeburg, where he had served as worthy patron for 23 years, a 60-year member of the Masonic Fraternity, life member and past master of Pythagorean Lodge 11 in Fryeburg and past district deputy grand master of the 16th Masonic District.
He was always extremely supportive of his children and their activities. He taught them, by example, a life of faith and service to others.
He is survived by his seven children, David and his wife, Catherine, of Salida, Colo., Donald and his wife, Catherine, of Fryeburg, Delph and his wife, Gail, of West Gray, Douglas and his wife, Andrea, of Kennebunk, Dianne Apgar and her husband, Stan, of Troy, Ohio, Deborah Larson and her husband, Charlie, of South Paris and Dayle Martin and her husband, Bill, of Stafford, Va.; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Joyce Rogers of East Baldwin; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife, Marie, in 1990.
