LISBON – The possibility of a BMX bicycle racing track being built on Pinewoods Road is apparently a dead issue after a straw vote by town councilors at their last meeting.

Maine BMX initially went to the council to ask if it had any objections to a BMX track being built on town land off Pinewoods Road, and the council took no position and sent them to the Planning Board.

The Planning Board tabled the issue after a lawyer representing an abutter opposed to the track told them that Maine BMX had no legal standing to make an application, because the group had no lease or agreement with the town to use the property. At that time, a large group of neighboring residents expressed their opposition to the bicycle track.

An estimated 50 residents who said they did not want the track attended the recent Town Council meeting and a petition containing 150 signatures of people opposed to the track was presented to the council.

Councilors then took a straw vote, which resulted in a decision not to support the request.
