I read an article Sept. 9 about drug testing for citizens in Rumford. In the article, a selectman, Frank DiConzo tried to get a new law passed to let the town randomly perform drug and alcohol tests on all town workers.

He said, “Everyone who receives a paycheck from the town, and volunteers for committees, should be drug free.”

I don’t agree. Randomly performing drug tests on the citizens is not right. What happens if someone broke a leg and was on pain medication? Would he or she be fired? I think not.

DiConzo also stated he “wants a new policy that will allow him to randomly test all town employees, elected officials and volunteers who serve on town committees for drug and alcohol abuse.”

Whoever said that having one drink every once in a while was against the law?

I am not saying I think it is appropriate for people to go and get high and drunk every night and then operate machinery on the job, but I feel that if DiConzo wants the law to be passed, there should be an election to see if the town agrees with what he wants.

As of right now, there is no law saying that he has the right to perform these tests until a new law is successfully passed. He seems to be saying that he does not trust any of the towns’ citizens to be drug-free.

Not everyone should be penalized for a few people’s bad decisions.
