SALEM, Mass. (AP) – A Salem woman has plead guilty to manslaughter after smoking a cigarette while her oxygen tank was on, causing a fire that killed a housemate.
Fifty-four-year-old Deborah Borella was sentenced Monday to 2 years in the House of Correction and ordered to serve one year of that sentence.
Salem Superior Court Judge David Lowy suspended the balance with probation.
Terms of her probation include that she not smoke, that she receive drug treatment and be subject to random screens.
Authorities say in March 2004, Borella was smoking in her bedroom near her oxygen tank when a blaze erupted. Thirty-nine year-old Theresa Reynolds was pulled from the fire but died later from burns and soot inhalation.
