PORTLAND (AP) – Repair crews were at the scene of a broken water main in Portland that forced the closure of a school and a state motor vehicle office.

The broken main on Presumpscot Street was discovered early Wednesday morning and the repair work was expected to continue through the day. Officials were urging people to avoid traveling in the area.

Classes are canceled for the day at Presumpcot School. And the Bureau of Motor Vehicles has closed its Portland office. The BMV says customers who need to conduct business with the agency can visit the nearest branch locations in South Portland, Topsham or Kennebunk.
