I agree with the Sun Journal editorial Nov. 17 that the only issue regarding assessing the resources of the Gulf of Maine is timing. Certainly, waiting another year to acknowledge that the wind offshore is sufficient to generate all the electricity that Mainers will ever need seems a bit foolhardy. Although it is a little embarrassing to admit that officials don’t know what resources lie under the Gulf of Maine, it may take a while to assess that accurately.
It is already known, however, what resources lie above the Gulf. There is sufficient wind to generate enough electricity to make the state energy-independent, using fuel it already has, will never run out of, and doesn’t hurt the environment.
Why would anyone want to wait even a minute to acknowledge that and begin actualizing the potential?
The only question is, how is the development of the wind farms going to be financed? The governor and his task force, as well as all the legislators at both the state and federal levels, should have the state’s energy independence via wind-generated electricity at the top of their “to do” lists.
And I mean now.
