FARMINGTON – SAD 9 directors are scheduled to consider a request Tuesday to form a dance club at Mt. Blue High School. There would be no cost to the district.
Adviser Eve Ellis had met informally with students interested in a dance club they are calling “Hip Hop Socialz,” before she realized she would need to come before the board to get permission to establish it, Superintendent Michael Cormier said in a memo to the board.
The program has stopped until that permission is granted.
Ellis proposes the dancing to be individual, or with timed pair or group moves.
Participation would be open to all but will require a commitment to work in practice after school and at home, Ellis’ proposal states.
Participants must be passing classes.
There is one adviser, and a part-time assistant in the classroom during practice.
“No cost, stipend, equipment or transportation is involved,” Ellis wrote.
The group consists of six to eight students who had met two or three times weekly after school for practice.
“Participation requires responsible involvement in terms of attendance and behavior,” Ellis stated. “The dance students feel that this activity gives them an avenue for expression not otherwise offered. There is an atmosphere of acceptance and friendship. There is support for one another in developing dance skills and routines. The goal of the students is to perform during an assembly,” she said.
The board will meet at 7 p.m. Nov. 25, at the Mt. Blue Middle School conference room.
Other items on the agenda include an update on the Mallett and high schools construction projects, and a proposal to have student representation on the school board.
