MARLBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) – The widow of a man crushed to death by a 2,500-pound granite slab three years ago has reached a $1.2 million wrongful death settlement with her husband’s former employer.

Lawyers representing Elisabete Rodrigues of Clinton say her husband’s employer failed to follow safety standards.

Valdecir Rodrigues died in October 2005 while he and a co-worker were trying to move a 6-by-10-foot granite slab that was between other slabs. The slabs fell on both workers, killing Rodrigues and injuring the other man.

The 38-year-old Rodrigues had been working at ASI Industries LLC in Marlborough for just two weeks.

He is also survived by two sons. Insurance paid for the settlement.

Lawyers say the accident could have been prevented.
