AUGUSTA (AP) – The Maine Warden Service has issued summons to four men from eastern Maine, charging them with illegally killing or possessing moose, deer and turkeys.

Lt. Doug Tibbetts said Tuesday that the charges include killing moose out of season, killing deer without a permit, exceeding the bag limit on deer and possession of turkeys during a closed season.

The men were identified as 45-year-old Larry Oliver of Danforth; 24-year-old Thomas Kenyon of Weston; 41-year-old Jeff Miller of Danforth; and 24-year-old Travis Potter of Wytopitlock.

Distress call in state may be hoax

BANGOR (AP) – The Coast Guard says a weekend distress call about a foundering fishing boat off Isle au Haut appears to have been a hoax.

Officials dispatched a Falcon jet and a 47-foot motor lifeboat Saturday. They searched the ocean for more than 10 hours in rough conditions with 17-degree temperatures and 35-knot winds but came up empty, said Coast Guard Chief Ilya Atamaniuk.

Deer smugglers get prison time

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) – Two men have been sentenced to federal prison for illegally transporting white-tailed deer across state lines, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department said Tuesday.

The deer were transported from Minnesota to Texas for trophy hunts. A federal district judge in Plano on Monday sentenced Robert Eichenour, owner of Circle E Ranch in Bedias, to 18 months in prison. Brian Becker of Madelia, Minn., was sentenced to 33 months in federal prison.
