At VCS we hold a chapel service every Thursday of the school year with topics that are relevant to a seventh to twelfth grader’s daily life. Over the past couple of weeks the topic and main focus has been how we develop and become who we are and who we want to be here and now in middle and high school. I personally have really enjoyed this topic because it speaks to my heart.
This past week we watched a clip from the movie Spiderman (who knew Marvel could have a spiritual impact on society!). In this clip, Peter Parker, who is Spiderman, is talking to his uncle, who is concerned that Peter has lost sight of his values and tells him, “These are the years that a man chooses who he becomes for the rest of his life. Be careful who you choose to be.” What I identified with most is that I learned I have the power to become who I want to be and not who society and those around me want me to be. I now can see that the things I am doing right now make a difference. I don’t have to be held back because I’m too young or don’t have enough life experience. I don’t have to wait until I’m 40 to be the change I want to see.
My hope is that all who read this will know that wherever you come from, whoever you are and whatever it is that you want to do in life, you can do it . Today You Are Becoming …. REALLY!
