I am writing to support the work of the Citizens Commission on Lewiston-Auburn Cooperation and to urge the two city councils to begin to implement some of the cost-saving measures that have been suggested by the commission. Fifteen years ago, L/A Together began to look at ways that Lewiston and Auburn could share municipal services and save taxpayer dollars. Four years ago, a commission was established to rework the effort; and two years ago, yet another commission was established to move the work of the previous commissions forward.
To date, I have not seen any concrete results from these years of studies and more studies. There have been report cards from the editorial desk of the Sun Journal giving grades for the work done to date. Thus far no commission has graduated.
I read with interest articles about how important it is for municipalities to work together, especially now in this most difficult of budget times, locally, statewide and nationally. Why haven’t the leaders of the two cities moved forward with the work accomplished over all these years?
Every article I read about the positive side of consolidation makes sense to me. I am wondering now how much money would have been saved if the leaders of the two communities had taken action 15 years ago?
Isn’t it time our cities moved forward together?
