CANTON – Doris Bragg Buchanan, 90, died Nov. 25, at Victorian Villa after a slow decline in health.
She was born in Canton, on Dec. 1, 1917, the second daughter of Harrison and Mary Ellen Darrington Bragg. She graduated from Buckfield High School. She met her husband, Robert Porter Buchanan, in the late 1930s when they were both working in food service at the Hebron Sanitorium.
After their marriage in 1940, they owned and operated the Norway Diner. They also farmed and grew food to supply the diner. After selling the diner and spending some time in Fort Myers, Fla., they settled in Auburn. Bob and Dot lived in the house they built at 37 Garfield Road for more than 50 years. They enjoyed vegetable gardening and many people will remember buying vegetables from their porch.
She was a multi-talented homemaker. She loved gardening, cooking, sewing and knitting. She was a charter member of several local and state-wide craft organizations, including the Central Maine Arts & Crafts Guild, the United Maine Craftsmen and the Society of Southern Maine Craftsmen. She enjoyed selling her knits at the Fryeburg Fair for 28 years, until she was in her late 70s.
She also enjoyed camping and fishing, and shared these outdoor experiences with her husband and two daughters when they were young.
While living with her daughter, Kathleen and her husband John, when she was 88, she turned her life back to God and since then had experienced great peace. She gave a very moving testimony to her husband shortly before he died.
She is survived by two daughters, Mary Ellen Buchanan of Naples, Fla., and Kathleen Thomas and her husband, John, of Damariscotta; three grandsons, Robert F. Erickson Jr. and his wife, Bernadette, of Scituate, Mass., Jess Markey of Allston, Mass., and William Berube of Carrabassett Valley; one great-granddaughter, Emma Leigh Berube; her brother, Thomas Bragg of Sumner; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Robert Jan. 1, 2007; and her siblings, Velma Ellingwood, Grace Keene, Mildred Bragg and Charles Bragg.
