SEARSPORT (AP) – Police say thousands of dollars worth of heirlooms and other items that were allegedly stolen from a retired sea captain have been found at the home of a Searsport man charged with taking hostages at Stockton Springs Elementary School.

Fifty-five-year-old Randall Hofland is being held on $1 million bail in connection with the Oct. 31 hostage case and an earlier incident in which he allegedly pulled a handgun on a Searsport police officer.

Police said the items found in Hofland’s home were allegedly stolen from Capt. George Perkins between 2001 and 2004.

Hofland lived at Perkins’ home in Stockton Springs for a number of years and served as his caregiver.

Police Chief Dick LaHaye said the investigation of the alleged theft is continuing and could lead to criminal charges.
