LEWISTON – The Lewiston Maineiacs’ offense is dormant no more.

Two nights after lambasting league-leading Shawinigan, the Maineiacs fell behind early, but rallied for seven consecutive goals, posting a convincing 7-2 victory over the Acadie-Bathurst Titan in front of 2,985 at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee on Friday.

“Our forecheck is getting better, and we’re creating some offense off of that,” Maineiacs’ coach Ed Harding said. “It’s a good win for us, it’s two in a row, and now we look forward to Victoriaville on Sunday.”

The post-Thanksgiving Day crowd – the largest home crowd of the season by better than 300 – saw a little bit of everything: Plenty of offense, a solid defensive effort (22 shots allowed), and timely goaltending.

“The biggest thing in the past two games has been the great goaltending we got from Peter Delmas (on Wednesday) and Philip (Wright),” Maineiacs’ forward Mac Gratchev said. “That’s the key to winning.”

Alex Beaton provided most of the offense. The second-year forward was in on four goals, scoring twice and helping on two others.

“I’m glad I found some offense,” Beaton said. “No one panicked on this team. We just kept going after being down early and created a lot of offense.”

Gratchev continued his torrid points streak, earning his 19th and 20th points in the last seven games with a pair of goals.

Wright started in goal – his fifth start of the season – and earned his fourth victory with a 20-save effort.

“You need to make all of the easy saves and a few timely saves,” Harding said. “(Wright) battles hard. He may not be the most technically-sound goaltender, but he’s going to battle hard, and he’s getting better on the technical side, too.”

Lewiston again came out on fire, holding the Titan at bay for much of the first five minutes. Acadie-Bathurst caught a break shortly thereafter when Lucas Labelle, on his way out of the zone, lost the puck to Spencer Jezegou, who turned around on a 2-on-1 and slid the puck past Wright to give Bathurst the lead.

Cameron Critchlow pounded home a rebound off a Drew Paris shot at 13:42 to give the visitors a 2-0 lead, but that advantage was short-lived.

Beaton took a behind-the-back feed from Pier-Olivier Morin and flipped a bouncing backhander past Nicholas Champion low on the stick side to cut the deficit in half.

In the second, Beaton and the Maineiacs’ offensive machine went back to work, scoring four more unanswered goals.

Defenseman Eric Gelinas started things off with another power-play goal on a blast from the right circle, a spot from which he’s scored three goals in four games on the man advantage.

Seventeen seconds later, Beaton notched his second of the game to give Lewiston the lead.

Dominic Savoie potted his first goal of the season on a backhand saucer feed from Steeven Jacques on a 2-on-1 rush. Savoie tipped the puck past Champion 5-hole to give the Maineiacs a bit of a cushion.

Wright earned his keep with one of his best saves of a the season when he robbed Jezegou of a second goal at 19:39 of the middle frame.

“I took a look at the play, and I figured (Jezegou) had no other option but to shoot,” Wright said. “I started coming out and stayed square.”

On the ensuing faceoff, Beaton sprang Gratchev on a breakaway, and the 20-year-old sniper deked to the backhand and beat Champion.

“He deserved the goal on that one, not me, really,” Gratchev said of his goalkeeper.

Lewiston has a quick turnaround this weekend as the team travels to face the Tigres on Sunday, and then to Rimouski on Tuesday before returning to Maine for a pair of games against the Quebec Remparts at the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 5-6.
