PORTLAND (AP) – Police say an attack with a meat cleaver in downtown Portland has resulted in the arrest of a 41-year-old Portland man on a charge of elevated aggravated assault.
Police say they were called at about 5:30 a.m. Friday to the Congress Street building where the assault took place.
The 33-year-old victim, who is not being identified, sustained multiple injuries to his head and extremities after being struck with a meat cleaver. The victim was admitted to Maine Medical Center.
The suspect, identified as Jose Mendoza, fled after the attack and before police arrived but was arrested a short time later.
Police say the victim and suspect knew each other and the attack did not appear to be random.
