AUGUSTA (AP) – The group Mothers Against Drunk Driving has issued a report that’s critical of Maine’s laws to curb impaired drivers.
A report released this week ranks Maine ranked 42nd of the 50 states. It says 36 percent of all traffic fatalities in Maine last year were the result of drunken driving.
MADD’s report cites Maine’s discretionary, rather than mandatory, ignition interlock device law. It also says state laws permit drunken drivers with multiple convictions to retain their licenses.
MADD figures taken from the state say 21,759 drivers on Maine roads have three or more drunk driving convictions. An additional 3,875 drivers have five or more such convictions.
