BURLINGTON, Vt. – Josh Burrows scored the game-winning goal at 10:28 of the third period as the University of Vermont snapped the University of Maine’s seven game unbeaten streak with a 3-2 win in Hockey East play Saturday.
The Black Bears (7-4-1) received goals from rookies Gustav Nyquist and Brian Flynn. Maine took a lead at 2:54 of the second period when Flynn scored his third goal of the season on an assist from David de Kastrozza.
Goalie Scott Darling made 20 saves in goal for Maine, while Mike Spillane earned the win with 21 saves for the Catamounts (9-3-2).
Manhattanville 4, USM 2
BABSON PARK, Mass. – Senior Kevin Maresco scored one goal and assisted two others to lead Manhattanville College to a 4-2 victory over the University of Southern Maine in the semifinal round of the Babson Invitational on Saturday.
The Huskies (2-2) pulled back to within one when junior Brett Kapteina scored on a rebound 1:12 into the third period. However, just seconds after a USM power play expired late in the session, the Valiants (3-2-1) netted a huge insurance goal when junior Niklas Berntsson converted a breakaway pass with 1:09 remaining.
Southern Maine senior goalie Jamie Gilbert of Lewiston turned back 40 shots in the losing effort.
Bowdoin 4, UMass-Dartmouth 2
BRUNSWICK – The Bowdoin College men’s ice hockey team scored a trio of second-period goals to earn a 4-2 win over the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth in the Bowdoin-Colby Face-Off Classic on Saturday.
The Polar Bears (3-0-1) outshot the Corsairs (5-2-1) by a margin of 9-5 in the opening period, but failed to find the back of the net.
Bowdoin broke through in the second period when Jeff Fanning, Graham Sisson and Colin MacCormack all scored.
Bowdoin sophomore defender Kyle Hanson was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament.
Women’s basketball
William Paterson 67, Colby 66
MONTCLAIR, N.J. – Elisa Brown hit a jumper with three seconds left to lift William Paterson to a 67-66 victory over Colby College in women’s baksetball action Saturday afternoon.
After watching William Paterson lead much of the game, the Mules (2-1) finally caught the Pioneers (3-1) and went ahead when Julianne Kowalski hit two free throws with 1:47 to play for a 62-61 lead. But, the Pioneers won the battle of lead changes on Brown’s field goal.
Kowalski shot 7-for-11 from the field and 5-for-5 from the foul line and six rebounds. Alison Cappelloni added 12 pionts and six rebounds, while first-year forward Rachael Mack finished with 12 points, four rebounds and three blocked shots.
NJIT 68, Maine 60
ORONO – Jessica Gerald recorded 26 points to lead the New Jersey Institute of Technology to a 68-60 victory over the University of Maine in women’s basketball action at the Dead River Company Classic Saturday afternoon.
The Black Bears (1-4) made a run and cut the lead to just five points with 3:20 remaining, and came within five again with just 1:30 remaining. But the Highlanders (1-4) held tough in the final seconds.
Brittany Boser led the Black Bears with 16 points, while rookie Samantha Baranowski added 13 points. All nine Maine players recorded at lead four points as Colleen Kilmurray and Tanna Ross each pulled down six rebounds.
