Dear Sun Spots: Quite a few years ago I found a high school ring on my property at Sabattus Lake, and when I saw the Stephens High School Reunion on Sun Spots I called to try to find out if I could see who this ring might belong to. I spoke with a woman who was going to try to find the person who may have lost the ring but never heard from anyone again. The ring is dated 1935 with the initial R on the top. I believe the initials inside are D T (or F) R. The school is Stephens High School. I would love to find the person this belongs to or the family of the person this belongs to! What a nice surprise this would be to someone! Please help! You can e-mail me at mvachon4@roadrunner.com with any information. – No Name, No Town.

Dear Sun Spots: This is in response to the person requesting recipes for traditional meat pies. I learned this recipe from my mother, who learned it from her mother, who brought it to western Canada from her mother and grandmother in the province of Quebec. It has nearly always won rave reviews from friends who request it every Christmas.

Ingredients: 1 pound lean pork; 1 large potato; 1 large onion; 1 teaspoon salt; ¼ teaspoon each nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves; dash of black pepper; two prepackaged crusts.

Method: Cook pork in large pot with about
1 cup of water until pork is uniformly gray in color. Boil and mash potato. Onion can be added to pork at any point. I use one cup frozen onion. Drain fat from pork until only enough is left to hold pork and potato together. Add mashed potato, salt and spices to pork and mix thoroughly. Fill pie shell, cover with second crust. Bake at 350 degrees for about an hour. I’d be glad to answer any questions at 376-5328. Thanks for your great column! – No Name, Lewiston.

Dear Sun Spots: Thank you for your help in getting a response to a request a few months ago. I need help from a lady in Bethel. A few months ago I put in a request for used pens or pen refills. A lady from Bethel responded and I had given her my address but have not yet heard from her. I did say I would reimburse her for the shipping as she said she could ship them to me. Help! Anyone having access to large amounts of pens or refills please respond. Anyone running large offices or school departments, etc. My phone is 207-897-2772, ask for me, Ray Boies. – Ray, Livermore Falls.

Dear Sun Spots: I was wondering if you could find out for me if a 1733 quarter was worth anything? Many thanks for all you do for everyone. – No Name, No Town.

Answer:
Sun Spots believes you may be reading the date on your quarter incorrectly. The U.S. Mint only began large-scale minting of the quarter dollar in 1796 and temporarily stopped until 1804. The original “head’s side” design showed a bust of Lady Liberty facing to the right. The “tails side” showed an eagle.
