AUBURN – Diane Smalt of Sabattus passed away Saturday, Nov. 29, at the Androscoggin Hospice House, after her long and courageous battle with Leukemia. She was a gentle and loving woman who died with grace and dignity with her loving family by her side, as she passed on into the arms of the Lord.

She was born in Fort Kent, on Nov. 17, 1954, the daughter of Ronaldo and Artheline Deschaine. She grew up and attended Lewiston schools.

She enjoyed helping others and giving of herself to family and friends. She was an avid reader, who loved all animals, especially her beloved cats, Alley and Bianca. She was especially devoted and enjoyed every moment with her beloved grandson.

She married Rod E. Smalt and even though divorced, they remained the best of friends.

She is survived by a daughter, Marisol Deschaine-Laney and her husband, Darin, and her only grandson, Devan R. Deschaine, of Sabattus; a sister, Jacqueline Deschaine of Lisbon; two brothers, James Deschaine of Lewiston and Ronald Deschaine of Auburn; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by both her parents; and her brother, Normand Deschaine.

She will truly be missed by her family and friends and all those whose lives she touched. The family would like to express its immeasurable appreciation to the staff and volunteers at the Androscoggin Hospice House of Auburn for their dedication to exceptional care and compassion. Their care and support was greatly appreciated.
