The Nov. 26 Sun Journal shared responses by elementary school children to the question “Why do we celebrate Thanksgiving?” I was surprised and disappointed that no one mentioned giving thanks to God for his blessings, his goodness and his provisions. Certainly schools can teach that part of the Pilgrims’ story, as well as their difficulties in the new land.

Nor could I find in the editorial any mention of thanking God, but reference to a holiday that is needed to celebrate bounty amid an uncertain future – needed because of the sentiments it signifies and the reflection it inspires.

One sentence almost has the message right: “This holiday reminds us that our wealth is not found in what might be fleeting, but what we draw upon in trying times.” Shouldn’t that be “whom” we draw upon in trying times – our heavenly father – God?

Let’s not forget the most important reason for the holiday.
