LEWISTON – Blankets, space heaters and a foot massager destined to be given away Tuesday morning will wait until Saturday, along with a host of other cold-weather survival goods and boxes of pamphlets on tenant rights and staying warm.

“We know that people want this information,” said organizer Barbara Rankins. “People need this information. But this may not be the best venue, or at least the best time.”

They’ll try again at 10 a.m. Saturday in the New Auburn Boys and Girls Club, 43 Second St.

Volunteers from the Lewiston Auburn Alliance for Services for the Homeless, the Adult Education Collaborative and the cities of Lewiston and Auburn are sponsoring the event, an informational banquet for renters, tenants and landlords with questions about staying warm.

Representatives from Liberty Mutual Insurance will be on hand to discuss renters insurance, officials from Central Maine Power will discuss energy savings and efficiency, and city officials will discuss financial aid and heating safety.

Tuesday, the volunteers gathered in the basement of the Franco-American Heritage Center with tables of brochures, food and door prizes. But nobody showed up to take any of it.

“People are working, so this may not be the best time,” Rankins said. “There are only so many times you can schedule something like this because you don’t want to conflict with their schedules. So we’ll try again, and maybe the weekend will be better.”

Door prizes include gift certificates to area merchants and restaurants, blankets, pillows, and space heaters.

“We even got a foot massager, and that could be really nice for someone who’s been on their feet shoveling snow all day,” Rankins said.

Door prize winners need to be on hand to claim the prizes. Coffee, donuts and lunch will be served Saturday, she said.
