Last year, Black Mountain of Maine hosted the first ever Rock Maple Snowmobile Race in our area. This event was new to us and we were not sure what to expect.

A great group of volunteers worked with the Rock Maple Racing staff to build the race track and host the weekend event. Racers came from all over New England; they came as factory teams, families and individual racers. Racers began rolling in early Friday morning and continued to arrive through the day and night. By early Saturday morning, the area was full of factory team trailers, motor homes, sponsor booths, food vendors and a constant stream of racers and spectators.

Black Mountain of Maine opens for skiing December 26, so the mid-December weekend fit very well. Snow making for the ski season starts in mid-November and was piled to insure a racing surface for the event. Following the event, the snow was pushed onto the alpine trails and ready for the new ski season.

Black Mountain played out to be one of the best race venues with full view of the race action. A huge race course jump was created in front of the lodge and spectators lined the bridge and the banks to watch all the action. The lodge offered a place to get warm and refreshments. Rock Maple Racing, along with the riders, rated the event one of the best in New England.

Weather for the event brought a very cold day of racing on Saturday, but it did not stop the large crowds who attended. Sunday turned out to be a blizzard, with over 16 inches of snow, that made for ever-changing races, but the day was great.

Black Mountain of Maine and the town of Rumford are proud to once again play host to this great event. If you are looking for some great entertainment and excitement, don’t miss this weekend.

On behalf of the Black Mountain of Maine Board of Directors, we wish well to all the athletes and great racing.
