NEW YORK (AP) – Authorities say a high school freshman in New York City has been struck and killed by a school bus.

New York City Department of Education spokeswoman Margie Feinberg says the 14-year-old girl was struck while walking to Francis Lewis High School in the Queens section of New York City. She was pronounced dead at a hospital.

The school has called in a crisis team to counsel students and staff.

The bus company wasn’t working for the education department at the time. It’s believed about four adult passengers were aboard. It’s not clear where the bus was headed when the accident occurred.

Says Feinberg: “It’s such a tragedy. Our hearts go out to the family.”
