Students visit stars at school PTO party
LISBON – The Lisbon Community School hosted a Star Party for students and their families on Nov. 7. The hit of the evening was a visit to the planetarium with Scott Negley of Kennebunk and looking at the telescopes with Ron Burgess and Forest Sumner of Southern Maine Astronomers.
“Although the night was overcast and we were unable to actually see the stars in the sky,” said Principal Carlene Iverson, “a portable planetarium provided a near real experience for all the students and parents.”
Iverson said, “We were also fortunate to have Ron Burgess and Forest Sumner from Southern Maine Astronomers come to help students learn how to use telescopes and share videos of a recent space mission to Mars. It was a fantastic evening for everyone.”
The event grew out of a desire of the PTO to bring experiences that were learning based.
“We had hoped to kindle an interest in star gazing that would be the beginning of many future family activities,” said Iverson.
