PORTLAND (AP) – Cumberland County Jail officials say a 26-year-old inmate has died after falling in his cell while under special observation.
According to the sheriff’s department, Paul Galambos was found unresponsive Friday morning and taken by ambulance to Maine Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Officials say Galambos had been taken to the hospital after three attempts to hurt himself. But he was medically cleared and returned to the jail the night before he died.
The medical examiner’s office and Portland police department are reviewing the case to determine if factors other than the fall or earlier attempts to hurt himself contributed to Galambos’ death.
