JAY – A raccoon that attacked a poodle on a porch on Belanger Road on Thursday has tested positive for rabies, Animal Control Officer Larry Wright said Friday.

The dog’s owner got the dog back into the house. When the man tried to go back out on the porch, the raccoon came after him, Wright said.

The man killed the raccoon.

Wright picked up the animal and took it to the Augusta rabies laboratory to be tested. It tested positive for rabies.

It was the first case of rabies in Jay this year, Wright said. Belanger Road is located off East Jay Road, which is off Route 133.

The poodle mix was examined, but no bite marks from the raccoon were found, Wright said.

The dog was up to date on its shots and just needed a booster shot, Wright said. It will be quarantined for 45 days.
