Two local men have been arrested on federal firearms charges of illegally selling guns, including sawed-off shotguns and assault rifles. Police say the men were arrested after they sold 10 weapons to undercover police.

Donovan Beavers, 20, of Turner, and Richard James, 43, of Auburn, were arrested Wednesday, charged with several federal firearms violations and taken into federal custody.

The arrest came after two months of undercover work by the Lewiston Police Department in conjunction with the Auburn Police Department, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, the U.S. Marshal’s Office and the Central Maine Violent Crimes Task Force. Police said undercover agents bought five handguns, three sawed-off shotguns and two semi-automatic assault rifles.

Police said the men had bought the weapons legally through private sales. They modified some of the weapons and tried to sell the guns without the proper licensing.

Police said they found the men through informants.
