BOSTON (AP) – Drivers, cut your engines.
A bill on Gov. Deval Patrick’s desk would limit the amount of time drivers of cars and school buses could idle their engines on school property.
The bill would require the Registrar of Motor Vehicles to determine how long it too long – and what exceptions should be made for safety reasons.
If there are no safety issues, drivers would be required to cut the engine while waiting for children to board or exit a bus while on school grounds and from starting a bus engine for any unnecessary period of time before leaving school.
The goal is to cut the amount of pollution pumped into the air near children.
Penalties would be $100 for the first offense and $500 for subsequent offenses.
