BETHEL – Joel Putnam and Dan Vaughn combined for 21 points in the first quarter to help Telstar open a 17-point lead and cruise to a 72-59 victory over Mt. Abram in an MVC boys’ basketball game Saturday.
The Rebels (1-1) received 11 from Putnam and 10 from Vaughn en route to a 25-8 advantage after one period. Putnam, who sank 11 free throws, finished with 24 points and Vaughn added 20.
Guard Sam Simpson kept Mt. Abram (0-1) in contention with 30 points, including three 3-pointers.Jim Barker added 16 points, including four from beyond the arc.
Lake Region 61, Gray-NG 48
GRAY – Lake Region limited Gray-New Gloucester to two points in the first quarter Saturday and remained undefeated in the Western Maine Conference with a 61-48 boys’ basketball victory.
Kevin Gilson led the Lakers (3-0) with 16 points. Zach Tomkinson added 15, while Phil Leighton dropped in 14.
Josh Farynaz poured in 16 points for the Patriots (1-2). Cody Humphrey dropped in 11. Evan Kenney connected for 10. Those three combined for five 3-pointers.
Winthrop 62, Georges Valley 42
THOMASTON – Andrew Smithgall scored 19 points and Zach Farrington chipped in with 11 to lead Winthrop to a 62-42 boys’ basketball win over Georges Valley.
The Ramblers (2-0) took control early with a 15-5 advantage in the first quarter. David Ketchen contributed eight points. Georges Valley (2-1) was led by Robbie Beverage, Chaney Oakes and Kiel Gauthier with six points apiece.
Jay 59, Carrabec 49
JAY – Kyle DeMillo sank five 3-points en route to a 21-point night to spark Jay to a 59-49 triumph over Carrabec.
Dominating the boards, the Tigers (2-0) took a 22-9 advantage after the first quarter and were never seriously challenged. R.J. Pinkham and Aaron Lane led the Cobras (0-2) with 14 and 12 points.
Hall-Dale 74, Lisbon 38
LISBON – Keith McGillvary and Ryan Leach each lit up the scoreboard with 21 points apiece as Hall-Dale rolled over Lisbon with a 74-38 victory in a boys’ basketball game Saturday.
The Bulldogs (1-2) built 38-20 halftime and held the winless Greyhounds (0-3) to just a total of 10 points for the second and third quarters.
No player scored in double digits for Lisbon. The Greyhounds’ leading scorer was Scott Eck, who scored eight points.
Mt. Ararat 58, Oxford Hills 43
SOUTH PARIS – Although Oxford Hills had no problem building a 28-24 halftime lead, the Vikings came undone in the second half as Mt. Aarat made off with a 58-43 victory in a boys’ basketball game Saturday.
The Eagles (1-2) held the Vikings (1-2) to just four points in the final stanza. Mt. Ararat erupted with 20 points in the third quarter.
Mt. Ararat’s Will Gerencer lead the way with 17 points, which included three 3-pointers. Teammate Cam Vermette added 16 more. For Oxford Hills, Jordan Farrar scored the team-high 15 points, and Jordan Collin added 11 and Josh Child scored 10.
Waterville 54, Oak Hill 49
WALES – Senior forward J.D. Gurski poured in a game-high 21 points as Waterville edged out Oak Hill 54-49 in KVAC boys’ basketball action Saturday.
The Raiders (0-3) rallied back frm a 27-17 halftime deficit in the third quarter to even things up at 35-35. Senior guard Ben Rines scored a team-high 14 points, while Shawn Greenier recorded 12 points and three steals.
Gurski was 5-of-6 from the foul line and collected 11 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter to put the Panthers (2-1) over the top before the final buzzer. Senior forward Nate Theriault chipped in with 15 points in the winning effort.
Maranacook 81, MCI 41
READFIELD – Ben Johnson poured in 21 points to lead Maranacook to an easy 81-41 victory over MCI.
The Black Bears (2-1) built a 17-2 advantage after one quarter and extended that to 39-17 and 62-25 after the middle two frames.
Jeff Duplisea added 14 points for the Bears. Jacob Hunt led MCI with eight points.
St. Andrews 80, Hebron 55
HEBRON – Mike Carter-Williams scored a team-high 17 points in a balanced attack as St. Andrews floated to an 80-55 victory over Hebron in boys’ basketball action Saturday.
Nyheem Sanders offered up 15 points as St. Andrews kicked up a bit of dust in the second half, outscoring the Lumberjacks (3-1) by margin of 46-29.
Oliver Brown recorded an impressive game-high 25 points for Hebron in the losing effort.
Boys’ hockey
G-NG/Poland 4, Messalonskee 3
HEBRON – Seth Champagne’s goal with 34 seconds remaining in regulation forced overtime, and Colby Arnold’s connection in the extra period Saturday pushed Gray-New Gloucester/Poland to a 4-3 Class A boys’ hockey victory over Messalonskee.
The Patriotic Knights (2-0) pulled goaltender Sean Bilodeau (20 saves) prior to scoring the equalizer. Chris Lessard assisted both Champagne and Arnold’s goals. Pat Collins also helped set up the game-winner.
Messalonskee (2-1) exploded to a 3-0 lead in the first period on goals by Nate Snow, Dustin Veilleux and Sam Dexter. Veilleux notched a pair of assists in the barrage.
Nate Becker and Lessard connected for G-NG/Poland in the second stanza. Arnold and Ben Piper logged assists.
Hebron 5, Portsmouth Abbey 0
HEBRON – Matt Siracusa recorded a pair of goals and assists to lead Hebron to a 5-0 victory over Portsmouth Abbey in boys’ hockey action Saturday.
Vlad Gavrik, Chris Gacsy and Chad Goodwin contributed a goal each for the Lumberjacks. Trevor White had a solid game in goal, stopping all 16 shots he faced.
Leavitt 7, Camden Hills 2
AUBURN – Senior forwards Steven Rouillard and Drew Bent netted a pair of goals each as Leavitt sailed to a 7-2 victory over Camden Hills in boys’ ice hockey action Saturday.
The Hornets (3-0) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period.
Junior forward Jac Dufour scored both of the Windjammers goals in the second period. Goalie Jacob Filderman made 28 saves for Camden Hills, while Cody Violette turned back 16 to earn the win in net for Leavitt.
