LEWISTON – Statistics might be overrated, but you can tell a ton about the first official Lewiston High School girls’ hockey team from the number of players in the scoring column.
Eight different skaters notched at least one goal or one assist Saturday, with junior Emilie Cloutier and freshman Marisa Zamrock each registering a hat trick in an 11-0 rout of Yarmouth.
“You back up three years and we had a couple girls who had experience. If they were on, we were all set,” said Lewiston coach Ron Dumont. “And now the girls, we keep improving and improving and getting more people involved. That’s what you want.”
Even the Blue Devils’ defensive corps got into the scoring act at Androscoggin Bank Colisee, with Courtney Vallee twice rippling the back of the net. Mariah Conway, Katie Cobb and Kristen Lacasse each added a goal.
Cloutier and Cobb chalked up three assists apiece. Conway and Vallee both set up a pair of goals. Zamrock also delivered an assist along with Michelle Rancourt and Olivia Cote.
“We’re having a really good season compared to past seasons,” said Rancourt, a senior tri-captain. “This year we’re strong on offense, defense, goaltending, everybody.”
Sixteen players deep in this inaugural season of Maine Principals’ Association competition, Lewiston (5-0) benefits from the presence of three seniors and six juniors who learned the finer points of the game at the club level.
“I think we’re definitely peaking this year,” Cloutier said. “My freshman year we weren’t as strong, but now all those girls in my age group are the core of our team. We’re building and building.”
Lewiston’s season sweep of Yarmouth was well in the bank before Cloutier’s natural hat trick in a six-minute span of the second period.
Zamrock (two goals), Conway, Cobb and Vallee all connected in the first 12-minute chapter to give the Devils a 5-0 advantage. Junior assistant captain Lacasse lit the lamp at 2:21 of the second prior to Cloutier’s outburst.
Senior Stephanie Belanger and sophomore Sarah Turner combined for a relatively quiet, nine-save shutout in the Lewiston net.
“We played them at their place a couple weeks ago, and they have a lot of girls still learning the game,” Dumont said. “I’ve been here three years, and we were much in the same position back then. Basically that group grew up together. We have a big junior class which has been together for the past three years.”
Although the girls’ version of the game only fell under the auspices of the MPA this winter, Lewiston’s athletic department has treated its boys’ and girls’ teams as equal entities for several years.
Cloutier said her team has benefited from the same practice schedule as the Blue Devils’ boys, who ride a lengthy streak of Eastern Maine championships.
“I don’t think it’s as different for us this year as it is for some of the other teams,” she said.
Already owning victories over Biddeford and Scarborough, Lewiston expects to be tested by Greely and Cheverus next week.
“We’ve played some teams that traditionally have done very well, and some other teams are in turnover. It’s all a numbers game,” Dumont said. “Fortunately this year all our girls have experience. Even if they haven’t played for us, they’ve played a lot.”
