RUMFORD – Edmund R. Leonard, 90, died Thursday, Dec. 11, at his Rumford Corner residence in Rumford with his family by his side.

He was born in Gray on Nov. 21, 1918, a son of Wilford and Rena (LaPiere) Leonard. He attended local schools and graduated from Pennell Institute in Gray, class of 1936, and Bates College, class of 1941.

He entered the U.S. Army on July 8, 1941, and served with the 43rd bomb group in Australia and New Guinea, returned to the U.S. on Nov. 20, 1944, and discharged from the service on Sept. 28, 1945.

He was married in New Gloucester on Jan. 29, 1942, to Geneva Rutter, who died in Rumford on April 15.

He taught history, coached basketball and later taught driver’s education at Stephens High School in Rumford for many years until retirement.

Survivors include three sons, Stephen Leonard and wife, Gwyn, of Redmond, Wash., Ronald Leonard and wife, Joyce, of Mapleton and Lyndon Leonard and wife, Trisha, of Rumford; a daughter, Judi Virgin of Embden; six grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

He was predeceased by his wife, Geneva; and two brothers, Ernest and Joseph Leonard.
