Sun Journal: This summer had to be an unreal time for you, getting drafted and all. What was your first pro camp experience like?

Peter Delmas: It was pretty cool. You had Joe Sakic, Ryan Smyth, Darcy Tucker all there, all guys I’ve always watched play. To be on the ice with them, and them shooting at you, you don’t want to let them score because you want to say you stopped them. It was a lot of fun, and a good learning experience for sure.

SJ: Goalies on this team in the past have always talked about readjusting to the Q after going to pro camp. How real is that to you now?

PD: I was talking to Kelsey Tessier (of the Quebec Remparts), and he and I were drafted by Colorado, and we called it the “Colorado Curse.” It’s pretty real, and it takes a while to get back into the normal groove of things.

SJ: This was the first time you knew, coming in, that you were the absolute No. 1 goalie for the season. How do you feel you adjusted to that?

PD: It took a little bit of time, but I think I’ve definitely got it now, and we’re going to start winning a lot more games than we have been.

SJ: The last two weeks or so, you’ve got to feel like you’ve played the best you have all season. Is there any particular point where things just kind of fell into place?

PD: I changed a few things I was doing. I think I changed my thinking a little bit. Going into games, I was a little bit different, I was thinking about different things and it seemed to work.

SJ: You’re still an 18-year-old player, which means, unless you make it to Colorado next season, you’ll be right back here again. What mentality do you take going forward, for the rest of this year and for next year?

PD: I know it’s the same answer you always get, but really, I just take it one game at a time. I’m not even looking at next season yet. We have a lot we can still do this season. We still have half the season left, and that’s plenty of time. Teams always change after Christmas, improving and other teams get worse, so we’re looking to make a little bit of a run, and we’re looking to go far in the playoffs, too. Everyone thinks our season’s over, but it’s not. It’s really just beginning. We had a rough start, but we’re really starting to put together some real strong weeks.

SJ: Off-topic a bit, goalies all over the place appear to be going to white pads. Is that actually helping, or is it more a mental thing?

PD: I read something about an eye doctor from Ottawa who told (Pittsburgh goalie) Marc-Andre Fleury his pads were probably the worst color they could be, because yellow is the most noticeable color to the eye, so he looked smaller, and if he wears white, he looks bigger. It is mental, because it’s all about the way you feel. I like color, and usually I like color on my pads. I tried the white pads this season. They get marked up pretty easy, though. I might go back to colors next year.”
