NORWAY – Timothy A. Churchill, president and chief executive officer of Western Maine Health, announces that Stephens Memorial Hospital has been awarded a three-year term of accreditation in stereotactic breast biopsy as a result of a recent survey by the American College of Radiology.
The ACR, headquartered in Reston, Va., awards accreditation to facilities for high standards after a peer-review evaluation of the practice. Evaluations are conducted by physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. They assess the qualifications of the personnel and the adequacy of the facility equipment.
The Women’s Imaging Department at Stephens Memorial Hospital includes mammography, ultrasound, and bone density, and performs nearly 5,000 exams a year. SMH provides up to 300 screenings a year to women who have no insurance or who are underinsured in an effort to make certain women getting their annual mammograms.
