AUGUSTA – One woman was killed and a second seriously injured Saturday night in a two-car head-on crash on Interstate 95.
Amanda Garwood, 19, of Winthrop, died in the wreck. Police said she was dead at the scene in the northbound land just north of Exit 109 at Western Avenue.
The second car, driven by Tara Gamwell, 25, of Portland, had crossed the median and collided head-on with Garwood’s car.
Gamwell suffered multiple injuries and is being treated at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.
State Police troopers said Gamwell’s car crossed the median and overturned several times into the path of Garwood’s vehicle.
The interstate was closed for more than two hours at the crash site as police investigated and reconstructed the wreck. Troopers haven’t yet determined why Gamwell’s car went out of control and into the other lane.
The crash was reported about 8:15 p.m.
Garwood, a sophomore at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Conn., was a graduate of Winthrop High School and was a noted althlete during her years there.
