SCITUATE, Mass. (AP) -An explosion has destroyed a house on Turner Road in Scituate, killing a man inside and heavily damaging some nearby homes.

Fire Chief Richard Judge did not identify the man killed in the blast, which happened at about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Judge said four neighboring houses are uninhabitable, and the street has been evacuated as a precaution. Power and natural gas service was shut off to the immediate area while utility and emergency crews investigate the cause of the blast.

He said a woman who lived across the street from the destroyed house was taken to a hospital. No serious injuries were immediately reported.

The fire chief said the state fire marshal, state and local police are investigating.

Neighbors said their windows broke and items were knocked off shelves as smoke filled the immediate area, and debris was strewn around the site.
