Driving home from work after Wednesday’s storm, Dec. 17, was treacherous on the back roads of Turner. My vehicle started to fishtail, turn around and plant itself backwards on the other side of the road in a ditch full of bushes.
My guardian angel was watching out for me as I was fine, there was no other car coming in the other direction, nor did I hit any of the many trees along that road. However, there was no way I was going to drive out of that ditch.
Having lived in Maine for some 27 years, I know how caring Mainers can be. The very next car to drive by me stopped. He put sand in front of my tires, but it wasn’t enough. Pretty soon another gentleman stopped. He lived nearby and told me he’d go home for a minute and be right back to help me. Then another kind soul stopped. He said his chains were at home, but he would get them and be right back. Before they returned, three other cars stopped and asked if I was OK.
The two men arrived back about the same time. They took over and figured how to pull the vehicle out.
All those people were on their way home, yet they took time to stop and help a stranger.
Is the spirit of caring alive in Maine? You bet it is.
My sincere thanks to all who cared enough to stop to help.
Gail Theberge, Turner
