BAR HARBOR (AP) – The Jackson Laboratory is postponing plans for a new distribution and warehouse center because of the poor economy.

Spokeswoman Joyce Peterson says the idea was to combine existing functions at the Bar Harbor laboratory into one building. Instead, the lab has decided to continue using its existing warehousing, materials management and distribution facilities to preserve capital.

Jackson Lab, a leader in biomedical research, employs more than 1,400 people, most of whom work in Bar Harbor.

It’s known for breeding specialty mice used in research. The lab expects to ship 2.5 million mice to approximately 16,000 researchers in more than 60 countries this year.
